Does the shopping cart allow customers to place an order for an item if the inventory quantity is at zero? For example, we will be using the shopping cart to sell dance shoes and will carry inventory for popular sizes, however for extra small or extra large shoes we will have to special order for the customer from Europe. Is there a way to trigger a message to the customer when the customer selects a size with an inventory quantity of 0 that we do not carry that size item in stock but can special order the item with a lead time of 4 weeks?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, the cart can handle your requirement. In the cart admin settings in the "General Cart Configuration" section there is a checkbox titled "Enable Inventory Management". Check this box if you would like the cart check for available inventory when a customer is checking out. When “Enable Inventory Management” is checked the cart will check for available quantity on hand, if quantity on hand for a product is less than the quantity the user has added to the cart, then the cart will display a message and not allow the user to proceed past the cart screen. If quantity on hand is available then the customer is allowed to proceed through the checkout and after a successful order, the quantity on hand field will be decremented by the quantity ordered. Product quantity on hand is managed in the product setup screen. When “Enable Inventory Management” is not checked the cart will not manage inventory as described above.

Sorry, I should have written the question better. We would like for customers to be able to order and pay for a product that is a special order and has a 0 inventory quantity (eg an odd size shoe). I think one of the shopping carts I looked at allows customers to order and pay for an item that is backordered. From your answer, it appears that Smith Cart will not let a customer order a product if the quantity is zero.

Regards,

Tom

By default the cart does not manage inventory so a user can order if the qty on hand is zero. If you check “Enable Inventory Management” in the cart settings then cart will manage inventory and not allow a customer to checkout if the qty on hand is zero. So you should be fine just leave the “Enable Inventory Management” unchecked.

Is it possible to put in an inventory quantity by variant. For example, a variant drop down list of shoe sizes with quantities per shoe size?

Thanks,

Tom

Managing inventory at the variant level is not currently supported.

Are there plans to add that support any time in the near future?

Yes we have received several requests for this feature and its on the dev list but we have been kept busy with sponsored changes and we have to work on those first. I will post in the forums when it has an eta for programming or it gets sponsored.
