Greetings,

Using DNN 6.1.5 and Smith Cart 4.93, and just now taking over maintaining a web site from the developer of our site.  We are a company that sells plants and various sizes and colors.  We're currently using color as the variant and we've noticed that variant quantities does next to nothing on the site.  "Sold Out" works only on the base quantity(which is useless when you have variants).  Product Quantity ignores any variant quantity, so essentially if I have a plant and 5 different colors of blooms with it in my inventory and only have one of them in stock, the ones I have out of stock I can still add to the cart(errors when I try to check out) and the ones I do have inventory don't show their own accurate quantity that I've set in Variants.

I've searched the forum and understand that it is supposed to modify the variant quantity on my end, but that doesn't really help the customer when they have to play a guessing game as to what quantity I actually have for any of the variants.  Am I missing something?  This seems like I'm doing something wrong when this feels like a substantial gaping hole in functionality if this is actually how this is currently working.

Regards

In addition, it appears that 'Hide Quantity' does nothing as well, when unchecked the quantity is only listed in the cart page, when checked, it remains in the cart page.

Hi Brad,

The Variant Inventory screen allows you to track product variant combinations (i.e Small red shirt, small blue shirt). On approved checkout complete the quantity on hand will be decremented from the variant inventory.

Have you setup your Variant Inventory by entering your variant skus and inventory using the variant inventory screen? The variant inventory screen is a sub menu option under "Variants" on the product menu at the top of the add products page.

Regarding the hide quantity issue in your 2nd post, Currently there are 4 places to enable/disable the "Hide Quantity" feature which are the following:

  • In the Cart Settings under General Cart Setup. Enable this if you would like to hide the “Quantity” textbox on the product listing page. This is useful if your business only sells to resellers that require prior approval before buying your products.
  • At the product level in the Product Setup screen. When enabled, this feature hides quantity for a specific product. This is useful when setting up a product catalog only or do not want the user to change the quantity for a product. When hide price or hide quantity is checked here the price will be removed on following screens and confirmation emails:
    • Product listing page
    • Product details page
    • Cart page
    • Confirmation page before payment
    • Confirmation page after payment
    • User and admin confirmation email
  • In the Product Details module Settings. When this is enabled “Quantity” textbox on the Product Detail page.
  • In the Featured Product module. When enabled the “Quantity” textbox on the Featured Product module will be hidden.

Thanks,

As mentioned in my first post, I do see that when you order a variant it changes the quantity in the variant inventory, however, it changes it no where else on the site. So, using my first example, if I have 500 of one item, 200 of the others, at no point does the site reference either of those values to the customer, it references the 'base' product(quantity), which if you're selling plants, what do you consider a 'base' product?

Currently as a work around I'm using the largest value of the variants as my base quantity, but you can see how that is an issue to customers if they think there's 500 of each of the products in the drop down, but that's not really the case. To me and the company I work for, that's a big problem and we're pretty sure we're not the first to come across this being an issue.

Also, I've checked every setting I could find through smith cart and the ones you provided and none of them are set to hide the quantity and quantity only ever shows up in the cart screen.

I'm truly hoping I'm missing some setting or something. Thanks again.

Hi Brad,

I believe the issue you are referring to in when checking out with a variant, and the Quantity On Hand which is set up in the Variant Inventory screen has been exceeded, the Cart would display the message "[ProductName] has an available quantity of __ please adjust quantity to checkout", the Cart was displaying the Quantity on Hand for the base product instead of the Quantity on Hand for the Variant.

This issue has been resolved and the solution will be included in the next release of the Cart v.4.99 so that when you have exceeded the Quantity on Hand available for the Variant and try to check out, a message will be displayed referencing the Variant's Quantity On Hand and preventing the user from checking out unless the Quantity has been adjusted.

Thanks for your feedback!

Kevin, Unsure if that's what we're talking about. Maybe once 4.99 becomes available I can confirm whether or our issue remains. To further clarify, on the site itself everything seems to reference the main product's quantity, whatever it is set at. However, if I have variants with different quantities, in this case plants, I may have plenty of flowers that have red blooms but people are going crazy for blue blooms. Now, If I have a customer that is on my site they only ever see the main product's quantity throughout the site only until they go to checkout and they get a quantity error that I believe you are referencing. This can be a problem when most of our customers will order many items at once to have to go through the whole process of adding items they believe to be in stock until they go to check out. Even something as simple as say a Quantity listing in the product detail page when I select a drop down for the desired variant would remove a lot of the frustration I foresee with it currently. Again, not sure if we're on the same page, but thought I would further clarify if we can confirm prior to 4.99 becoming available. Thank you.

Hi Brad,

In v.4.99, we have fixed the issue of the Quantity On Hand of the main product being referenced instead of the Variant's Quantity On Hand when the Proceed To Checkout button is pressed on the Cart page.

The Enable Inventory Management option will disable the "Add To Cart" button on the Product Listing page when product quantity on hand reaches zero and will also display the following popup message:

The Enable Inventory Management on Cart Page option will display "Product is currently out of stock, please remove the product from your cart to checkout" when the user presses the Proceed To Checkout button on the Cart page. See following screenshot:

The Cart has not been programmed to Disable the Add To Cart button on the Product Details module if a Variant is out of Stock.

As a possible solution, you can use the "Grid Layout" variant display option which gives you the option to display a Quantity On Hand on the ProductDetails page. The Quantity On Hand which is displayed on the ProductDetails page has not been programmed to utilize the Inventory Management feature which we plan on implementing in the near future.

Or if you would like to be provided with a fixed quote to sponsor a portion of the development to enforce Variant Inventory Management on the ProductDetails page and display the Quantity On Hand which is entered in the Inventory Management screen please send a Quote Request using the following link. We quote all feature enhancements below cost since it is enhanceing the module and in most cases we can start work within a week.
