Have a product with a variant. The variant adjusts the price +$28.
On product details you choose the variant and the price adjusts (as expected)
Add to cart and on the cart page the correct subtotal appears. 
When you add your contact info/address and click Calculate Shipping, the page refreshes and then the subtotal changes to reflect the product price sans variant. Why is this happening? Is this a bug? Is this bug fixed in newer versions of the software?

Hi Kevin,
Since I was unable to replicate the error on the latest cart v7.34, I recommend upgrading to 7.34 on a test site to confirm variants work for you in the latest version.  After you confirm its working on your test portal then upgrade your live site.  As always make sure you have a full backup before working on your live site.  Here is a link to download the latest version
