Purchases with a Paypal account with Paypal Payments Standard are auto returned correctly, confirmation of payment is received by the store, email notifications are received by the store owner and customer.

Purchases made without a Paypal account with Paypal Payments Standard using a Credit Card are not auto returned and confirmation of the payment is not received by the store, hence no emails are sent confirming the order.

However, payment is processed, and both parties receive Paypal notification although this obviously contains no details of the purchase (shipping fee, order number, etc).

We have tried turning on Credit Card in the options and this made no difference.

At the Paypal end, we can and have turned off the options allowing transactions without a Paypal account, for the time being, but we haven't tested credit card transactions through an existing or newly created Paypal account.

(incidentally successfully is missing an s in the payment status)

In the shipping email that is sent, [shipdate] does not insert replace, hence the email is sent with [shipdate] as opposed to the ship date.

I spoke with a representative in the technical support department of Paypal and they stated that there is no Auto Return functionality for purchases made without a Paypal account and that the Return to Cart link was the only thing available.

However, the issue is that clicking the link while returning us to the cart, does not bring confirmation to the cart although the link seems to be assembled correctly.

Is there an easy fix for this?

We fixed this issue and the hotfix is availible for v3.1 on the cart downloads page. The issue was with the paypal standard return parameters and the "PayPal Account Optional" setting in the paypal account. Returning to the cart worked fine the user used their paypal account when paying on the paypal site but if you had "paypal account optional = true" and the customer chose not to use their paypal account and pay with a credit card then paypal was returning "Return_to_Merchant" instead of returning a querystring with parameters the cart needed to determine if the paypal transaction was successful or not.

Here are the account settings that need to be set in your paypal account for the return to work correctly:

  • Auto Return: On
  • Return URL: Your domain name
  • Payment Data Transfer: Off

Hotfix availible on the cart downloads page.
