I have purchased the latest Smith Cart, but have a question about the DNN Search Results...

When using the DNN Search, I got a list of products back, but instead of a 2-3 line summary, the results contained everything in my description tab (very verbose). Is there a way to show just summary output instead of the whole product page?

Jason

First of all, sorry no one got back to you sooner, now onto your question: Are you talking about the DNN search box or the Search Bar on your products list page?

Thanks,

Christian

The DNN search bar. I get results, but instead of a few summary lines, it pretty much shows the entire "Description 1" (first tab) in the product description.

Yes, somehow that should be configurable.

We are looking into the cart iSearchable program to verify if the searchable items and the data returned can be trimmed to 2-3 lines. We will postback when we have a solution. Thanks for reporting the issue!

Great news! Ideally, it would be nice to have a new field that we can enter the exact text that we want to show up in the search results kind of like how a Meta Description tag works in one of the search engines. However, I realize that requires a schema change in the database, so in the immediate short term, just taking the first X characters would probably work as well.

An interesting idea. Are you referring to the text being searched or the actual search results, or both?

Adding another database field is not an issue, but keeping an extra user defined value in sync when changing other product fields is a maintenance nightmare.

Should DNN and SmithCart return the same results or not? Would you use one and not the other?

I guess the bottom line is what to search and how to present it using iSearchable.

I don't have my site together yet, but I am just picturing myself as a consumer looking at my site. The first thing I see in the upper corner of the web page is the DNN search, so as a consumer, that would be the one that I use... Let's say that I use it to search for a product SKU1234, I am expecting a list of results that have pages which contain this text. Hopefully, one of them is a link to the buy now page in my cart. In all honesty, I think that the search on the actual Buy Now module is kind of hidden being so close to the middle of the page.

That being said, when you use a major search engine (Google for instance), and search for something, you get a list of results back. For instance, go to Google and search for "Smith Cart". You get 10-12 results back each with 1-2 lines of text. This text is sampled from the page (it's obviously not the entire page, just a couple of lines). However, with search engines, there is a META DESCRIPTION tag at the page level that you can fill out which is the text that Google would show if the tag is found. It's almost like an override for the search summary. The idea is that you could add an additional field on the product which would be what is returned in iSearchable for the search output. If the value is null, meaning you didn't fill out this field (it's optional), then we just return either your item Summary, or just the first X characters of your item summary.

The good news is that no code changes are required to limit the results. This is already supported in the Search Results settings.

Maximum Search Results:
Results per Page:
Maximum Title Length:
Maximum Description Length:
Show Description?

I have also incorporated your suggestion into iSearchable without schema changes using Product SEO Description. I would like to examine this a little further to see how to get the best results between DNN and Smith Cart.

Thanks for the feedback. I was unaware of the search results module settings. I have adjusted those and my search results look a lot better! Thanks for the tip!
