I just upgraded from 2.64 to 2.76. When I try to add a product I get the following error:
Error: is currently unavailable.

Also Product details have completely disappeared so I get a blank page for product details when I'm logged out as a site visitor.

There was an issue with the assembly version that we have fixed beginning in version 2.76 of the cart. All versions of the cart prior to version 2.76 will not be able to be upgraded by simply installing the latest version over the existing version. Since I only had a couple of products in the cart I uninstalled 2.76, restarted IIS and restared MSSQLServer. Then I re-installed the cart again, but I'm still getting an error:

Tried uninstalling and installing a couple of times to make sure I'm doing it right. No luck!
I had to restore the whole portal operating with the 2.64 version for now. There must be a better way to upgrade?

Your web.config is referencing an older version of the ajax toolkit. You can fix this by making a small change to your web.config. See the following forum post:

Just email sales@smithcart.com and tell dave you would like to upgrade and he will send you a link for the download. Make sure you read the upgrade policy though, because you have a limited time after initial purchase to receive free upgrades. You can purchase an upgrade license to stay current. Hope that helps.
