I am not forcing account creation, but if someone is not logged on, when they go to check out they are getting "User already exists".

 

Any thoughts on this?  I'm wondering if I don't have a blank user or something somewhere that could cause something like this?

Yup... verified... this is something weird in the cart... I just tried it (not being logged on) and got:

 

User Name already exists. Please choose another user name.

What page in the checkout are you getting the message :

User Name already exists. Please choose another user name.

On the sign in page or the confirm page?

Confirmation page. As soon as they click "Confirm order".

I am using a temporary work-around of "Add to cart requires login". But I don't want that to be a permanent solution.

In your buy now settings under "Sign In and Registration Page Setup" which option do have have selected? "Hide Sign In Page", "Show Sign In Page" or "Show Login on Confirmation Page" ?

None of the above.  I don't have a section that says "SIgn in and registration page setup".

Under "General Cart Setup", I have "Add to cart requires login", but that doesn't work always.  I still have users saying that they are getting the "User already exists" error on checkout, until they log in.

I'm not sure what's going on... the only reason that that particular message should pop up is if a session variable is not set.
