I have picked up a problem with bulk import.

Some of my product names have the # symbol in them, as do SKU's and the names of images. The problem is that any image files that have the # in their name (like Spares-4#3-Z-01-Thumb.jpg) seem to be geting cut off at the "#" - so that the image reference is cut short to Spares-4 - as a result I have a whole batch of products that have no images showing, as the image filename has been corrupted.

The weird part is that other fields, like Product Name, Description etc that also have the # symbol in them don't seem to be affected - ie I get the complete Product Name imported (Spares-4#3-Z-01 in the example above).

Before I have to go through renaming hundreds of images, and their corresponding fields in the spreadsheet, is there a solution to this, or can you tell me what is causing this?

I hope there is a fix to this ...

Hi Sian,
The # sign is not a valid character to use in your filename when uploading images.

You cannot use the following characters anywhere in a file name:

  • tilde (~)
  • number sign (#)
  • percent (%)
  • ampersand (&)
  • asterisk (*)
  • braces ({ })
  • backslash (\)
  • colon (:)
  • angle brackets (< >)
  • question mark (?)
  • slash (/)
  • pipe (|)
  • quotation mark (“)
  • You cannot use the period character consecutively in the middle of a file name.
  • You cannot use the period character at the end of a file name.
  • You cannot start a file name with the period character.

Hi Scott

OK. Damn. I'll have to manually go and fix these then.

I have noticed another issue - if I do a bulk import (and I have ftp'd the images up to the server), when I go an edit a product record, it is not showing the thumbnail image - while it has the path correct (ie./portals/0/SmithCart/Thumbnails), it is using the large image name and not the name assigned to the thumbnail field in the spreadsheet.

Please can you look into this issue as well.

Tx
Sian
