In the buynow module settings under the confirmation page (before payment) section their is a checkbox titled "Require Login" if you check that box the optional label will not display and the userid and password textboxes will be required.

I just tested it and see what your talking about. The label used to change before we did the language localization a few versions back now all the labels are in resx files. To the change the label open up "confirm.resx" and change the label titled "txtLogin_Information.Text" and you will be able to remove the word optional.
