Greetings,

This question is about the Shipping Calculator.  I have a client who ships a relatively light product (smoked salmon) in 4 lbs of packaging needed to keep it fresh.  We could just add 4 lbs to the product weight but many customers buy multiple products and they are shipped in a single 4lb package.  We're currently adding a flat handling charge to make up the difference.  Unfortunatley, this does not work so well when clients select options like FedEx Next Day Air which is much more expensive per pound.

Is there a way to set packaging weight to be added once per order?

SmithCart 4.99, DNN 6.1.5, SQL 2008 R2

Thanks!

Hi David,

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "Is there a way to set packaging weight to be added once per order" but I believe you may be looking for functionality similar to the Max Package Weight feature which is currently only available for the UPS Shipping Calculator which will calculates the number of packages and weight and calls the API For example, if the total weight of the items in the cart is 350 lbs and max package weight is 150 lbs the cart will calculate number of packages and weight as follows:
350/150 = 2.5 (round up) = 3 packages
Package 1 and 2 weigh = 150 lbs
Package 3 weight = 50 lbs

If you have budget in your project and would like to be provided with a fixed quote to sponsor a portion of the programming to implement the Max Package Weight feature for the FedEx Shipping Calculator, please submit a quote request at the following link: https://www.smith-consulting.com/Serv...

Thanks,

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the speedy response! I don't think we're on the same page. Our special packaging weighs 4 pounds so we need to be able to support order scenarios like:

Order Item 1: 1/2 pound
Order Item 2: 1 pound
Packaging: 4 pounds
Total: 5.5 pounds <---This is the value we need to send to the FedEx shipping calculator.

The 4 pounds of packaging adds a lot of the cost of shipping, especially for next-day shipping, and we need to pass that along to the customer.  We're currently adding a fixed handle fee but that does not cover the shipping cost when customers select expensive shipping options.  It will not work to add 4 pounds to each product as customers usually order multiple products and the packaging can hold several items.

Is there a way we can set a constant value for the weight of the special packaging? Is it possible to force each order to include a "packaging product" that weighs 4 pounds but doesn't have any cost?

Thanks again,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for clarifying I think I understand a little better about the Shipping and Packaging rates you are looking to achieve.

One option for you would be be utilize one of the Custom Shipping Method options such as Ship Methods with Fixed Amounts or Ship Methods By Weight as you can specify a Surcharge for each Custom Method which would be useful for managing variable ship costs like your special packaging such as yours or tariffs, COD, fuel surcharges, etc.

If you would like to continue using the FedEx Shipping calculator to return shipping rates, you would need the ability to specify a handling or packaging charge dependent on which FedEx Shipping Method the user chooses however currently this is not supported but we are available to customize the module to better suit your needs. If you have budget in your project, we can provide you with a fixed quote to sponsor a portion of the development, we can prioritize and move this feature into programming. Please submit a Quote Request at the following link, we quote all enhancements below cost since it is enhancing the module and in most cases we can start work within a week. https://www.smith-consulting.com/Serv...

Thanks,
