Any update on this yet? We don't know what that Callback is or how it would be implemented if it works.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you. The callback suggestion was just a programming term to test to help pinpoint the problem.

It is extremely difficult to reproduce this and I have not been succesful so far.

Just trying to help.

John,
I tried again to replicate this on 2 different portals one public domain and the other on my localhost and am unable to replicate and no one else has reported the connection dropping to UPS so the issue must be with your specific server/hosting. The following are a few things to check:

1. Check to see if you have any firewall rules that may be filtering or dropping the connection
2. Check your firewall logs to see if there is any info that can help troubleshoot
3. Check your virus protection software on the server to see if that may be killing the connection
4. Check your windows logs
5. Check your IIS properties basic and advanced
6. From windows - start - run load the MMC and check your certificate store to make sure there are no conflicts or settings that are causing the ups cert from being authenticated.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have posted to iHost in hopes of a solution. That all has to be done from there in I believe. I'll let you know.

BTW: You notification by email function doesn't work in the forum. I have to check back manually to see if a response or post is up. No emails.

If you go to your profile and add your email address the forum email notifications will work.

I submitted your suggestions to iHost. Their response:

We looked over these things on the server as suggested. We did install intermediate certificate files just in case. We haven't had any issues with SSL certificates on that web server but we figured we would install the extra intermediate certificate files just to be sure. Also we shut down and recompiled your site in debug mode to ensure that the site is compiled and running properly as it should be. Please check to see if either of these changes has helped with your site's issue.

No change in results. Very discouraging. Why would it work fine for nearly a year and suddenly, bang!?

If it happened after a specific date, you may want to ask iHelp to check the dates of the certificates. It is quite possible that the certificate

a) does not match the name of the server that is issued with the SSL certificate.
b) may no longer be accepted under certain conditions.
c) has been revoked by the certificate revocation list.

Unfortunately this article is outdated and the workaround should not be used in a production environment as it will hide the underlying security problem which, in itself, is a security problem.

Since this seems to be a single case scenario triggered by a specific date, it would appear to be related you your specific environment.

You might ask iHost to copy your site to a completely different server to test this reproducible error. If it works, there must but be something wrong with the server certificates. If it does not, then you may have found a genuine bug, not necessarily with SmithCart, but in .NET itself.

After further investigation, I have some more ideas.

Login as Host and select Host|Dashboard

1) What is the server time?

It may sound like a funny question, but I am quite serious. Is the server time the same as http://nist.time.gov/?

2) What is the ASP.NET identity?

Far fetched, but it may not have access to the certificate store. Highly unlikely as this was working before.

3)  Was IIS reset after installing the chained certificates?

iHost restarted your website/apppool, but iisreset may be required. Just a stab in the dark.

4) Will iHost check the server security event log for information related to the event?

If the error is reproducible on demand, this should be an easy check.

5) Will iHost run this tool on their server?

http://www.iis.net/community/default....

This is a Hail Mary pass to help find the cause. I really doubt they would take a chance at this level of expertise.

At this point, I believe your only other option is to install your website and data on a completely separate server to prove if it works or not. I am even willing to offer a test DNN platform if you want to try this option.

Darn it! I hate this kind of problem. Now I can't sleep.

Please send an email to djbaldwin (at) winhurst (dot) com and I will send you a specific purpose test file to override SSL certificate handing in .NET for DotNetNuke version 5.4.1 and SmithCart

The time is 40 seconds different. Matter?

The rest I believe iHost has to do, I've given it to them.

Thanks again for kicking in and digging.
