I've talked with our shipping guy and went througha and placed some test orders, for some reason our shipping is usually significantly cheaper (40% in some cases)

How are the shipping rates updated?

What table to they pull from?
Are they automatically updated all the time?

We mostly ship UPS, but sometimes we ship fedex as well, is there a way to have both options available?

Thanks!

Regarding the ship rates being higher do you have negotiated rates with UPS? When using UPS the cart calls the UPS api real time to get rates it doesnt use a local cart table. Currently there is not an option to combine UPS and Fedex if you would like a quote to add that feature please send and email to sales@smith-consulting.com

No the rates that I was comparing to are the standard public rathes. There seem to be about 10-20% highter in Smith Cart than what we calculate. I double checked and maked sure that I converted correctly from ounces to pounds (all of our items are pretty heavy) and it is all setup right. 16lbs on our site shows up about 8-10$ less than what Smith Cart is posting. (same zip, city, and state are selected)

I have the shipping setup by zip code.

You said in your post "I have the shipping setup by zip code" when you use the ship calculator you dont configure shipping by zip code can you explain what you mean by "I have the shipping setup by zip code"

heh yea sorry for the confusion.

Even though shipping calculator is selected, changing the zip code will obviously change the amount that shipping costs because it is going somewhere else.

Did you try selecting the different options under the "address type" radio button in the buynow settings to see if that gives you lower rates?

Sure I just went ahead now and change it from auto to residential and commercial (in 3 different browsers to make sure cache wouldn't be a variable.

The shipping cost did not change when doing that.

In one of your posts above you said you converted your product weights to pounds. In the cart product weights need to be entered in ounces did you enter your weights as ounces in the cart. How much do you products weight?

Again I apologize for my poorly wording typing.

We use products in pounds, but I did go through and convert all 300 of our products from pounds to ounces. For example, a 16 pound pacakge (which is the one I am testing) would have went in as 256.

The issue might be with package type the cart defaults to "box" and since you are shipping heavy items you might be using a packaging option like crate or carton. You can always adjust the weights in the cart up or down to get the ship price to match your warehouse/packaging system.

So is there a way then where I can change it from box to carton for all of our products somewhere in the code? I'm assuming it calls out to UPS somehow and gets updated rates, so maybe I can just specificy to get the rate for cartons instead of boxes? I think that might be easier than going througha and changing the weights.

Currently the cart doesnt have a setting to change the package type when using the UPS shipping calculator you will need to change your product weights in order to adjust the shipping cost.
