In your Product Details module settings which Image Gallery option do you have selected? Enable Image Gallery with Zoom Effect or Enable Image Gallery with Lightbox Effect?

I have not been able to replicate an issue of changing from the 1st image to 2nd image taking time to load. As soon as selecting the next image the switch is immediate. You can confirm this at the following link: http://www21.smith-consulting.com/Sto...

You may be experiencing a slow load due to hosting are the bandwidth issue. It is possible to add a loading icon but the change will need to be made in the code behind. I will add this to our Dev List to be added in the future or if you would like to be provided with a fixed quote to priorirtize the item please do one of the following:

Upon my first time  visit to your site, I did click from the default picture to the second one. I took a good while. For the first 10-12 seconds, I did not see anything, but at the last 15 seconds, I did see an icon that said it was loading. Below is what I saw (screenshot). Said "Loading Zoom". The others did not do the same. How big in size are your pictures. Size as in kbs or mbs? Keep a backup of these original images and try resizing them to a smaller file size and upload them to see if this resolves the issue. Just my suggestion.
